About the role:

The role is for Arcadis’ Highways Infrastructure design team in Kings Cross. This team has a focus on urban highway engineering and development infrastructure design. The team delivers to a wide range of clients which include local highway authorities; developers; the automotive, aviation and ports sectors; and contractors. Some current and recent clients include Transport for London, Leicester City Council, DP World London Gateway Port, Barking Riverside Ltd., Royal Borough of Greenwich, London Borough of Camden, Ford Land, FM Conway, HS2, Highways England, Dover Harbour Board, Segro, Homes England, Rochester Bridge Trust and the construction industry charity CRASH.

The team works closely with the traffic engineering, transport planning and structures teams, and increasingly it is exploring opportunities that harness its engineering skills along with the advisory/consultancy side of the Arcadis business to deliver a truly multi-disciplined service.



Due to an increasing pipeline of work the team leadership needs support with the technical delivery and management of projects. The role’s key responsibility will be delivering highways and multidisciplinary projects to a standard that addresses both our clients’ and our internal expectations on quality, programme and budget.

The team is very strong on ownership of shared improvement and the role will carry a challenge to promote good practice and innovation through personal targets to develop the team’s efficiency, accuracy, programme adherence etc. As such the role is crucial to and influential on the future growth and success of the Kings Cross team and its partner team in Croydon. The role will carry an expectation of being an exemplar of the company’s health & safety and sustainability culture, along with our People First values.

Immediate project opportunities for this role will include the Silvertown Tunnel Supplementary Works design for Transport for London and the Croydon Next Generation Highways Contract for FM Conway.

The role will report to the Team Leader and will work closely on a day-to-day basis with the Principal and Senior Engineers in London, our other offices in the UK and remotely with the Global Excellence team in India. The role will require short trips to our offices in India when beneficial to projects.

The role will be supported by training to help with the effective management of design projects at the highest level.


About you:

As a Senior / Principal Highways Engineer, you;

  • Must be a team player, experienced in leading civil design multidisciplinary teams,

  • Will have experience in leading the delivery of multidisciplinary projects at a design manager / coordinator level from within a design consultancy environment to urban highway, contractor and developer clients.

  • Will be experienced in managing the delivery of projects using technical staff from local teams and other parts of a wider organisation including overseas offices.

  • Will need strong experience in the geometric design of highways; urban road improvement design including roundabouts and junctions; non-motorised-user scheme design; design of signing, parking, and highway drainage modifications; design of car park layouts; and other elements related to roads in the urban environment and in developments.

  • Will have strong experience in the implementation of the DMRB and Manual for Streets.

  • Will need effective communication skills to ensure efficient and accurate briefing and reporting.

  • Must be driven to help others succeed and develop future leaders within the team.

    Additional skills that would be beneficial:

  • CAD and Civil 3D skills would be useful but not essential as you will as a minimum have a sound aptitude for managing others skilled in that software can be demonstrated.

  • Experience of delivering projects in a BIM environment.

  • Site experience 


  • The candidate will need to demonstrate great on the job experience and ownership of delivery on projects in relevant fields of design and engineering.

  • Ideally BEng or MEng (dependent on when the degree was attained) in Civil Engineering or a similar related subject.

  • Chartership with the Institution of Civils Engineers or similar would be beneficial, but we are willing to look at individuals that have great on the job experience as well.
