University of Birmingham

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering/Materials Engineering - 58367

This is an exciting time to be an engineer at the University of Birmingham. We are into Phase 2 of our regeneration and are investing significantly in people and infrastructure – ground has just been broken on our new £65m signature build and our £28m UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Centre of Excellence for Digital Systems.  In addition, our world-leading National Buried Infrastructure Facility will shortly open in October 2019.

The School has a long history of undertaking world class research and is proud of its strong and extensive links with industry ensuring that our innovative research is rapidly translated into practice. As part of our investment, we are now seeking to appoint a motivated and highly research active Structural Engineer (or allied subjects) to join our dynamic team and help us create the future.  We are particularly interested in colleagues with the potential to demonstrate ambition, innovation and leadership, and thus we will consider excellent candidates in closely aligned fields.

In addition to undertaking high quality research, it is expected that the appointee will have excellent communication skills and the ability to undertake inspirational teaching.  Successful candidates will be expected to be able to teach and supervise projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level.  We are particularly interested in candidates with teaching experience in Engineering Design, Structural Engineering and/or Materials Engineering.  All appointments will be made on merit.

Candidates will be expected to have a first degree in engineering, a relevant doctoral qualification and be able to demonstrate their commitment to Structural Engineering.

We pride ourselves in the inclusive nature of Civil Engineering and will happily explore alternative working arrangements in order to ensure that a suitable environment exists where the best candidate can succeed.  Thus, the positions are available to candidates requiring part-time and flexible working.

Salary: £40,792 - £75,744 (Lecturer salary from £40,792 - £48,677 a year with potential progression (to £54,765 a year)). (Senior Lecturer/Reader salary from £50,132 - £58,089 a year with potential progression (to £75,744 a year)).

The successful candidate will be appointed at the grade appropriate to their experience and qualifications.

Informal enquiries about the post may be made to Professor Mark Sterling, Head of School of Engineering (Telephone: 0121 414 5065; e-mail m.sterling@bham.ac.uk) or to Professor Nicole Metje, Head of the Power and Infrastructure Research Group, (Telephone: 0121 414 4182; email n.metje@bham.ac.uk).
