Civil Engineering and Structures Design Coordinator - York.

The Renewals and Enhancements Framework requires a Civil Engineering and Structures Design Coordinator to oversee design consultants in the production of Approval In Principle and Detailed designs. Across the framework the designs will include: underbridge / overbridge strengthening, repair, and replacement; level crossing upgrades / replacements; scour protection and coastal defences; station refurbishment; Enhancements projects such as new stations; Ancillary Civils for other disciplines.

The Design Coordinator will ensure that designs prepared by the consultants fit the client's requirements, as set out by the contract documents, and provide the best engineering solution including satisfying any budget or constructability constraints. The successful candidate will be located in York, with semi-regular travel required for meetings in other offices (e.g. Newcastle, Manchester) and occasional site meetings around the LNE region (Eastern Scotland border to Kings Cross).

Key activities will include:
  • Reviewing designs to assess whether they are suitable to submit to Network Rail for approval, providing feedback to the designers to ensure the designs are suitable for submission.
  • Monitoring the design programme and ensuring programme milestones are met.
  • Discussion and resolution of any emerging design queries either directly or by referring them on to the relevant parties (e.g. client) for resolution.
  • Liaison with the construction team to review aspects of the designs such as constructability and health and safety implications.
  • Liaison with colleagues and designers responsible for other disciplines to ensure all designs are sufficiently coordinated.
  • Managing the interface between designs and any affected areas or parties including temporary works, the public, the operational railway, and stakeholders.
  • Participation in regular design progress meetings.
  • Input into internal programme monitoring, cost monitoring, and risk management.
  • Leading value engineering workshops at design commencement.
  • Participation in inter-disciplinary check meetings for all designs.
  • Identification of any additional information required by the designer (such as topographic surveys or record drawings) for the design, and liaison with relevant parties to secure the information.

Job Requirements
Your qualifications, skills and experience should include:
  • Civil Engineering degree.
  • Knowledge of Civil Engineering sufficient to work toward Incorporated / Chartered member level of ICE.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience of design / design management / construction to inform design compliance and constructability reviews.
  • PTS and CSCS certification preferred but not essential.
  • Awareness of design codes, specifications and standards relating to core construction activities and materials.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently when required.
  • Familiarity with the rail environment preferred but not essential.
