When to upgrade from TiN To AlTiN
Titanium nitride coating (TiN) is the gold-colored classic coating used on cutting tools. It’s tough, smooth, and economical. But (depending on the tools’ purpose), aluminum titanium nitride coating (AlTiN) can take performance further. The added aluminum forms a protective oxide layer at elevated temperatures, ideal for dry or high-speed machining.
When should you switch? If your TiN-coated tools dull quickly at high temperatures or build up material on the edge, AlTiN can help. The oxide barrier keeps the cutting zone cooler and sharper.
Compare both under identical setups: same feed, speed, and coolant conditions. Track tool life, spindle load, and finish. If the aluminum titanium nitride coating delivers longer runs, the upgrade pays off.
Keep in mind that geometry and alloy matter. Hard steels and nickel-based materials benefit most. For lighter machining or plastics, titanium nitride coating still offers substantial value. Test data, not guesswork, should drive the decision.
