As a multi-national advisory and design consultancy with a global workforce our client creates award winning solutions for the transport, utilities, property and environmental sectors whilst currently building skills and capabilities in two emerging sectors; energy and resources.

Their Geotechnical team is involved in some of the UK’s most high profile, complex and stimulating projects that are diverse and technically demanding. Their client portfolio includes the Highways Agency, Transport for London, Local Authorities, the Environment Agency, Canal & Rivers Trust, Water Companies, Network Rail and selected Civil Engineering Contractors for whom they undertake the planning, design and supervision of geotechnical engineering solutions including, managed motorways, harbours, ports, water treatment plants, reservoirs, rail electrification, station upgrades and structures across a wide range of geological conditions. 

Our client is now seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with 10 to 12 years’ experience to work within their Highways, Rail and Utilities sectors.


MEng in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical engineering bias.

Or ideally

MSc in Geotechnical Engineering or Soil Mechanics

Chartered Engineer or progressing towards becoming a Chartered Engineer in relevant field

Job Description

As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer you will have 10-12 years’ experience as a geotechnical engineer.

The role will involve managing projects from conception to completion, provide leadership and technical support to project team members. You must be able to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and experience with regards commercial aspects of projects.

Good motivational and people management skills with the ability to influence staff and clients particularly regarding technical issues.

The role will involve building relationships with clients, controlling commercial aspects of projects together with assisting and participating in developing team members to their full potential.

The successful candidate must have detailed geotechnical design experience including foundations, retaining walls and slope stability assessments and also experience in ground investigations design and implementation.

The software’s you will be using – VDISP, Wallap, SLIDE & SlopeW. You will have good numerical skills and experience in the analysis of geotechnical problems and manage the production of analysis and design ensuring compliance in the components of the project for which you have responsibility, including drawings, reports, specifications and studies.
