The role

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. With around 7,000km of flood defences on rivers and 22,000 flood defence structures, some as big as the Thames Barrier, maintaining our flood defences is just as important as constructing new ones.

Our assets are diverse: from flood and coastal defences to earth banks, walls, pumping stations, flood storage reservoirs and sluices. They require constant management, maintenance and replacement. Our Asset Performance teams make sure that all assets are inspected, surveyed, assessed, maintained and operated in a safe and effective manner to reduce flood risk for people and property. We also ensure that flood risk is managed by others, often inspecting assets and encouraging intervention if required.

Pivotal for the delivery of flood defence projects, you’ll ensure that flood defences in your area are fit for purpose. The role is extremely varied and will include delivering construction projects and maintaining the Environment Agency’s range of flood defence structures. As well as monitoring the progress of all work, identifying gaps in the delivery of priorities and taking the necessary remedial action, you’ll be on hand to respond to issues and emergencies. You'll be a point of technical expertise for colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

This is a high-profile area of the Environment Agency – the work you’ll do will truly make a difference to people’s lives, and that’s incredibly rewarding.

About you

Experience in construction, civil, or an allied engineering subject is important, as this type of understanding underpins much of the work we deliver. Applications from IEng and CEng engineers are welcomed although this is not essential (we’ll support your professional training towards IEng or CEng if you would like to).

You should have an understanding of (ideally experience with) flood risk management or whole life asset management. Experience of CDM Regulations is desirable.  An appreciation of environmental issues and health and safety is desirable as we consider these in all that we do.

Along with a methodical, intelligent approach to problem-solving, you’ll thrive on challenge and share our high standards.

The rewards

As well as a competitive starting salary we offer:

  • A generous pension scheme
  • Holiday allowance related to length of service, rising from 27 days to 30 days per year, plus bank holidays
  • A range of flexible working options including flexitime - our aim is to help you achieve a positive work-life balance
  • Financial and professional support towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave schemes
  • Interest free loans for travel season tickets and bicycles
  • Childcare vouchers scheme
  • Plus many more benefits
